James Sutherland was born in Scotland. He received his dance education at the "Rambert School of Ballet" in London. Until 1990 he was a dancer with the Basel Ballet under the direction of Heinz Spoerli. Sutherland is a freelance choreographer since the mid-1980s and worked, among others, for the Stuttgart Ballet, the State Theatre in Wiesbaden, Kassel and Schwerin, as well as for the Ballet of the National Opera of Ankara. From 2002 to 2015, he was Ballet director in Pforzheim. Starting from the season 2016 | 2017 James Sutherland is Ballet director at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern.
